This Week's Patent News:

  1. Samsung has filed two patent infringement cases against ZTE in the Unified Patent Court’s Mannheim division. These involve two wireless patents targeting ZTE’s European subsidiaries, aiming to push for a cross-licensing deal. The cases are part of broader FRAND and antitrust disputes, with both companies represented by prominent legal teams.

  2. Recent UPC developments include Hurom winning an injunction against NUC over a juice extractor patent, jurisdictional clarifications for pre- and post-UPC infringements, and several new cases such as Michelin suing Goodyear in Paris over a tire patent. Hearings on various disputes are ongoing across Europe.

  3. French Publishers and Authors Sue Meta Over AI Training. On March 12, 2025, French publishing and author associations, including SNE, SNAC, and SGDL, filed a lawsuit in Paris against Meta. They accuse Meta of using copyrighted content without authorization to train its AI systems, claiming copyright infringement and economic parasitism. This case reflects a broader trend of legal actions targeting tech companies over the use of protected data for AI training.

  4. Bayer Obtains Injunction in Brazilian Soybean Patent Dispute. On March 14, 2025, Bayer obtained an injunction to halt a Brazilian court ruling that allowed soybean farmers reimbursement for royalties on expired patents for genetically modified soy seeds. This temporarily blocks the decision while the state court of appeals reviews the case. The dispute involves Bayer's Intacta RR2 PRO technology, affected by the 2023 Brazilian Supreme Court ruling limiting patent rights to 20 years.

  5. Brave Software Sues News Corp Over Alleged Copyright Misuse. On March 13, 2025, Brave Software sued News Corp to block litigation over claims of misappropriating content from the Wall Street Journal and New York Post. The Visionaries Behind Royal Caribbean's Oasis-Class Marvels

When Royal Caribbean introduced its Oasis-class cruise ships, they were not merely larger but revolutionary. These floating metropolises, accommodating over 6,000 guests, emerged from the vision of Harri Kulovaara, Royal Caribbean’s Executive Vice President for maritime and newbuilding. Widely regarded as the "architect of modern cruising," Kulovaara led the design of a vessel class that redefined maritime engineering and luxury.

At the heart of the Oasis-class innovation is the “neighborhood” concept, which divides the ship into distinct areas like Central Park, Boardwalk, and the Royal Promenade. This was an aesthetic choice and an engineering masterstroke, enhancing efficiency and passenger experience. Constructed in partnership with STX Europe, these ships introduced industry firsts, from zip lines to the Aqua Theater, pushing the boundaries of design and entertainment.

Kulovaara’s influence extends beyond the Oasis class. He pioneered the Quantum class, the world’s first "smart ships," and spearheaded the avant-garde Celebrity Edge class fleet. His latest endeavor, the Nova class for Silversea Cruises, represents a bold step toward sustainable cruising.

A naval architect with over 40 years in the industry, Kulovaara previously served as COO of Silja Line before joining Royal Caribbean in 1995. He chairs the Cruise Ship Safety Forum and holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Helsinki’s Technical University. In 2015, the University of Strathclyde awarded him an honorary doctorate for his relentless pursuit of maritime innovation. Kulovaara has not just built ships; he has shaped the future of cruising.
