๐พ The Goose, the Foot, and the Physics of Not Settling
How one manโs waterskiing mishap launched a revolution in prosthetics, and gave a goose a second chance.
In the 1970s, Van Phillips was just 21 years old, out waterskiing like any other thrill-seeking young adult with a fondness for summer. Until a split-second accident changed everything: he lost his leg below the knee.

At the time, the available prosthetics wereโฆ letโs say, functionally medieval. Heavy, rigid, and utterly uninspired, basically one step up from a wooden peg.
But Phillips wasnโt having it.
Where others saw limitations, he saw an engineering problem. So he did what any physics-savvy, materials-obsessed, newly one-legged dreamer would do: he built a better leg.
Using carbon fiber, inspired by the energy-returning motion of animal tendons, Phillips designed a prosthetic that flexes and rebounds like a natural limb. The result? The Flex-Foot, a spring-loaded, cheetah-like prosthetic that resembled something out of a sci-fi movie, changed the lives of amputees around the world.
Paralympians now run faster with this technology than most people ever will with both feet intact. Phillips didnโt just reinvent the prosthetic; he redefined what was physically possible.
But letโs not forget the most unexpected twist in this tale.
Years later, after his invention had made a global impact, a goose (yes, a real one, waddly and winged) suffered a leg injury that wouldโve been a tragic end for most birds. But thanks to Van Phillipsโ groundbreaking limb design, this goose was fitted with a custom Flex-Foot-style prosthetic and resumed honking, hobbling, and strutting as if nothing had happened.
From Olympic stadiums to barnyards, Van Phillips gave mobility a new meaning.

๐ Engineering the Data Inside the Field: How Mahesh Somarowthu Made Farm Machines Smarter ๐พ
Mahesh Somarowthu is an automotive and agricultural technology innovator with over 14 years of experience designing advanced embedded software systems. Based in Pune, India, he holds seven patents and specializes in both AUTOSAR- and non-AUTOSAR-compliant software development using Model-Based System Design. His expertise spans low-level drivers and complex control functions, particularly for off-road vehicles used in agricultural and turf applications.

At Deere & Company, Somarowthu has made notable contributions to precision agriculture through patented systems for data recording and sampling in agricultural machines. His work introduced an intelligent, sensor-driven architecture that integrates material sampling, data capture, and traceability via an electronic control unit. The result is more accurate monitoring of material streams, enabling better analysis, informed decision-making, and improved farm productivity.
Collaborating with global engineering teams, Somarowthuโs innovations help modern agricultural machines become smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable, advancing the future of data-driven farming.

๐ The Forgotten Invention That Fixed the "Death Wobble"! ๐ฒ๐จ
Meet Patent #224,165, the 1880 game-changer that saved the tricycle! ๐ ๏ธ Before this breakthrough, turning a corner on a trike was a recipe for a tip-over. ๐
The genius of this patent was an improvement to the crankshaft design. It allowed the outer driving wheel to rotate freely while turning, while the inner wheel maintained power. ๐ This early "differential" concept meant riders finally had real control and stability! โ๏ธ
It was a massive leap for early cycling engineering, paving the way for the smooth rides we enjoy today. ๐ From shaky wobbles to precision steeringโhistory was made! ๐
